START A SCHOOL
I'm Dr. Jeannie Gudith, Founder and CEO of JAG Consulting. We help you develop, improve, buy or sell your private school.
Essential insights for school founders and administrators ready to stop reacting and start leading.
You already know the feeling. It’s 7:00 PM on a Tuesday, and you’re looking at a whiteboard filled with "Strategic Initiatives" for the upcoming fall semester. You have eight of them. You’ve got a plan for a new STEM lab, a revised faculty compensation model, an updated enrollment strategy, a campus beautification project, and four other "non-negotiables."
It feels productive. It looks like growth. But here is the reality check: If you have eight priorities, you actually have zero.
In the world of private education, we call this the Priority Paradox. It is the seductive lie that doing more things adequately is better than doing two things exceptionally.
The data is brutal on this point. Research across sectors shows that 60–90% of strategic plans fail to be fully implemented. In the nonprofit and education space, roughly half of schools fail to meet even 50% of their strategic targets.
Why? Because human bandwidth doesn't scale as fast as your ambition does.
| Focus Level | Success Rate | Impact on School Valuation |
|---|---|---|
| 1–3 Priorities | 90% Completion | Exponential Increase |
| 4–6 Priorities | 50% Completion | Moderate / Stagnant |
| 7+ Priorities | <10% Completion | Diluted / Decreasing |
Key Insight: Strategic planning isn't about deciding what to do; it's about having the courage to decide what NOT to do.
Stop thinking of your strategic plan as a bucket for every good idea your board had over the summer. When you walk into August with an 8-point plan, you aren't leading a school; you’re managing a wish list.
Speed matters enormously. In a private school environment, your staff has a finite amount of "change capital." Every new priority you add tax-deducts from their ability to execute the existing ones. When you spread that capital across eight different fronts, you don't achieve breakthroughs. You achieve a series of mediocre ripples.
Are you flying blind into the new semester?
Think about your teachers. If 95% of employees in most organizations don't understand their company’s strategy, how can you expect your 3rd-grade lead or your Admissions Director to execute a complex 8-point maneuver? They can't. They will default to what they've always done, and your strategic plan will end up as a PDF gathering digital dust.

You might think, "But Jeannie, we need to do all these things to stay competitive!"
Yes: even tuition increases depend on the perception of excellence. But here’s the elephant in the room: The schools that do a few things exceptionally well consistently outperform those doing many things adequately.
Parents don't choose your school because you are "pretty good" at eight things. They choose you because you are the best at the two things that matter most to their child. Whether that’s a specialized learning support program or a world-class arts curriculum, your private schools business plan must reflect that focus.
When you divide your focus, you divide your budget. Statistics show that 60% of organizations do not tie their financial budgets to their strategic priorities. If you have eight priorities but only one pot of money, seven of those priorities are effectively unfunded mandates. That is a recipe for faculty burnout and administrative friction.
Before the first bell rings in August, you must perform "Strategic Triage." We recommend a 3-Tier Framework to help you identify your "Big Two."
Does this priority directly impact enrollment strategies or student retention? If it doesn't move the needle on your "Full Pay" student count or your "Net Promoter Score," it might not be a top-tier priority for this year.
Is the priority required for accreditation or legal compliance? This isn't "exciting" strategy, but it’s the floor you stand on. These are non-negotiables.
Does this priority increase the long-term valuation of your school? If you were to sell your school in three years, would this initiative make you more attractive to a buyer? (Hint: A focused, high-performing culture is worth much more than a fragmented one with a new playground).

Pro Tip: If a project doesn't hit at least two of these tiers, move it to the "Future Considerations" list. Not the "Priorities" list.
For founders and owners, this isn't just about making the school run smoothly. It's about equity.
When we help schools through acquisitions and sales, the most valuable institutions are always those with a clear, documented, and executed strategic focus. A buyer doesn't want to buy a school that's "trying to do everything." They want to buy a "machine" that does one or two things perfectly and has the data to prove it.
Key Insight: Execution is the ultimate multiplier for school valuation.
Do this tomorrow morning. It will take you exactly five minutes, and it might save your entire academic year.
These are your only priorities. Everything else is just a task. If someone comes to you with a "great idea" that doesn't serve #1, #2, or #3, the answer is: "That sounds interesting, let's look at it in January."
